Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder)

Adhesive Capsulitis or frozen shoulder causes severe restriction of shoulder movement due to pain. The condition results from abnormal bands of tissue that form on the joint capsule, thereby restricting motion and producing pain on movement.

Signs and symptoms may include aching in the shoulder region. Having restricted movement of the shoulder and constant pain may also be signs of a frozen shoulder.

Causes of injury may come repeated tearing of soft tissue surrounding the joint or from scar tissue formation following shoulder injury.

Immediate treatment follows application of moist heat to the shoulder to loosen the affected joint. During your recovery process, this should gradually be accompanied by stretching exercises to restore mobility. Heat therapy should be combined with sports therapy to help avoid formation of scar tissue.

Without adequate treatment and a correct recovery period, a frozen shoulder tends to worsen over time. Attempted athletic activity involving the affected shoulder will likely lead to further adhesions of the joint, leading to further pain and restriction of movement.

Moving the shoulder through the full range of motion several times daily, as well as strength training exercises that we will provide, will all help to restore the full movement of your affected arm.
