Lilian Samata - Knee Injury

‘I unfortunately had a fall and I landed awkwardly.. I immediately felt pain in both my ankle and my knee. Following a couple of days rest, I returned to my training at Liverpool Aquatics Centre. I tend to train 3 days per week, doing strength and small group training with my friend, Carolyn. We perform exercises such as weighted squats, weighted lunges and kettlebell swings. However, I instantly noticed pain in my knee and felt I could not carry on.

Lee Gallagher and Jean-Jacques Sillito both work within the gym I visit. They have always been very helpful to me and other members when we need advice on exercises, techniques and nutrition. I thought I would seek their advice regarding my issue.

They performed a thorough assessment of my kneeand advised me to go see a medical professional to rule out any bone fractures, which I did, and there wasn't any which was good. After a two-week break, Iwas ready to start training again, however I could still feel the pain in my knee. Lee and Jean-Jacques asked to see my exercise programme, and adapted a few exercises so I could train with low risk regards to my current injury. Exercises such as squats and lunges still caused me pain, so these were taken out of my session … for now!

I was introduced to exercises I’ve never perfromed before, using equipment I hadn’t used, but still targeting the muscles I wanted to train and without as much pain, and I felt benefits quickly! I started exercising in the swimming pool, and using resistance bands to increase my range of motion and joint mobility. I was also shown appropriate stretching exercises for part of my cool down, I found this increased my flexibility.

We progressed onto performing progressive strengthening exercises for muscles around my knee, which I improved my knee stability. Over time, my knee felt stronger, and the pain was becoming less and less. Months on, I can now perform the exercises I want to, such as weighted squats and lunges, but I still ask Lee and Jean-Jacques for assistance to ensure I prevent a future injury.

I was very impressed with how they were able to adapt my exercise rouitne to allow me to exercise and rest at a level which didn't cause me a lot of discomfort. They were very encouraging and progressed my programme at the appropriate times to increase the intensity of my sessions.

I would recommend using Sports Therapy Hub! Not only are the therapists very knowledgeable, they really go the extra mile to help clients with their issues. The facilities they have are second to none, including a fully kitted out gym, a swimming pool, and a private and confidential treatment room’

Thank you to Lee and Jean-Jacques for all your help!
