Patellofemoral Joint Pain

Anterior knee pain, referred to as Patellofemoral Joint Pain, causes discomfort across the front of the knee. This type of injury can make activities such as the stairs, running, jumping, standing up from a chair and having your knee bent for a prolonged period of time can be difficult.


Patellofemoral Joint Pain can be caused by several factors such as;

  • Overuse of the knee joint

  • Problems with kneecap alignment

  • Certain anatomy or body types

  • Weak muscles surrounding the knee

  • Improper equipment use or sports training techniques

  • Changes to footwear

  • Hard playing surfaces


Symptoms

  • Pain during activities that bend the knee, including squatting or climbing stairs

  • Pain after sitting for extended periods of time with your knees bent

  • Crackling or popping sounds in your knee when standing up or climbing stairs

  • Pain that increases with changes to your usual playing surface, sports equipment or activity intensit.y



Patellofemoral Joint Pain responds excellently to conservative treatments. This can include stretches to improve flexibility, strengthening exercises to enhance control, and proprioceptive exercises to refine your balance. Build the control around your knee with balance exercises. This will promote better synchronicity between your knee and other joints, and ultimately enhance the function of your lower limbs.
