What is a 'Sports Injury'?

Sports Injuries are commonly associated with muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons of the body. These injuries can be referred to as strains, sprains or fractures.

Sports Injuries are very common with any person participating in physical or sporting activities, not just 'athletes'.

Sports Injuries can be defined into 2 categories;

1) Acute injury - an injury which occurs suddenly or instantly

2) Chronic injury - an injury which occurs over a period of time

Both categories can display symptoms such as aches and pains, swelling, bruising, redness, restricted range of movement or flexibility, loss of joint stability and the instability to place weight on the injured area.

Although we cannot 100% prevent sports injuries, we can minimise the risk with appropriate exercise programming, correct exercise techniques, regular stretching, and adequate warm up and cool downs. Inactivity can lead to poor posture, which can result in injuries such as lower back pain, which is not sport related, but can have an effect on your day to day activities or work life.
